Crisis institucional en Nicaragua: entre un Estado privatizado y un Estado monarquizado

Summary. In April 2010, President Daniel Ortega signed a decree to make the roles of 20 civil servants permanent, among them judges and members of the electoral tribunal whose mandates have ended. The institutional crisis is another chapter in a prolonged process of degradation of the State. The article argues that, in their return to power after 17 years in the wings, the Frente Sandinista needs a State that is small in certain areas and strong in others: a privatized State in its provision of social services; and one devoted to the regulation that controls foreign investment and to the continuity of a regime that is closer to a theocracy than to a democracy.
