Clientelismo en democracia: lecciones del caso argentino.
por Mariela L. Szwarcberg
This article analyzes the consolidation of political clientelism, defined as the exchange of particular goods –such as social plans and public employment– for political support in new democracies. Contrary to what the first investigations into the democratic transition found, clientelism has not disappeared. Quite the opposite, it has been consolidated. Through extensive fieldwork in Argentine municipalities, the text shows the existence of a logic of perverse incentives which are rewarded with political promotions to candidates who use clientelist strategies to mobilize the voters.
